What is included in a deep clean?

Exactly what a professional deep clean covers, room by room, how it differs from a regular clean, and the popular extras worth adding.

If you have only ever had a regular clean, the phrase "deep clean" can sound vague. What actually gets done that a normal visit does not? The short answer is that a deep clean is methodical and reaches the places everyday cleaning never has time for: behind and under things, inside things, and all the detailed work on edges and fittings. Here is what that looks like room by room.

In the kitchen

The kitchen takes the most attention because it holds the most hidden grime.

  • Degreasing the hob, splashback and the exteriors of all appliances.
  • Wiping inside cupboards and drawers where they have been emptied.
  • Cleaning around and behind the cooker, fridge and other appliances where reachable.
  • Descaling the sink and taps and clearing the plughole.
  • Detailing the tops of units, handles and any tiling.

An oven interior is usually treated as an add-on rather than part of the standard deep clean, simply because it is a specialist job in its own right. More on extras below.

In the bathrooms

Bathrooms get the full descale-and-sanitise treatment rather than a quick wipe.

  • Descaling taps, showerhead, screen, tiles and any glass.
  • Scrubbing grout and treating mould on sealant.
  • Sanitising the toilet thoroughly, base and hinges included.
  • Polishing mirrors, chrome and fittings to a smear-free finish.
  • Wiping cabinets inside and out before mopping the floor.

Throughout the bedrooms and living spaces

Away from the wet rooms, a deep clean is about detail and the spots a duster usually skips.

  • Skirtings, frames and switches: skirting boards, door frames, light switches, sockets and handles all wiped down.
  • High and low: light fittings, reachable ledges, picture rails, radiators and the tops of doors and wardrobes dusted, along with the often-forgotten areas behind and beneath furniture.
  • Glass: interior windows cleaned, with sills, frames and tracks done too.
  • Floors: carpets vacuumed thoroughly including edges, then hard floors washed corner to corner.
  • Marks: scuffs and fingerprints spot-cleaned from walls and doors.

How it differs from a regular clean

The simplest way to think about it: a regular clean maintains a home that is already in good order, working briskly across the usual surfaces and floors. A deep clean tackles built-up grime that a regular visit does not have time to reach, which is why it takes considerably longer, often most of a day depending on the size and condition of the property.

That extra time is the whole point. You are paying for thoroughness and for the reset it provides, not for the same job done a little slower.

Popular extras worth adding

A few jobs sit just outside a standard deep clean and are commonly added on:

  • Oven cleaning: a full strip-down of the interior, racks and door glass, usually a separate specialist task.
  • Carpet and upholstery cleaning: deep extraction for carpets and sofas, ideal if floors look tired.
  • Interior window detailing beyond a basic wipe, and inside-cupboard cleaning where you would like the team to empty and replace items.

Bundling extras into the same visit is usually more convenient and better value than booking them separately later.

What to expect on the day

A good deep clean starts with the team agreeing priorities with you, then working systematically through the property so nothing is missed. Clearing surfaces and emptying any cupboards you would like cleaned inside helps them make the most of their time. It helps to point out any problem areas at the start, the shower that never comes up clean, the cupboard that needs emptying, so the hours go where they matter most to you.
